In severe electrical service, PPE that meets the Category 2, 3, or 4 hazard risk assessment of NFPA 70E will be required. In many of these circumstances, electrical workers are required to wear some type of arc hood. At Paulson Manufacturing, we make two styles of face shields for arc hoods. One style is the recently launched 3Phase® Lift-Front Arc Shield which allows the user to lift the face shield for fresh air without taking off the hood while outside of the energized zone. The second style is a traditional switchgear hood, commonly referred to as a beekeeper hood. While beekeeper hoods might not have the added convenience of being a lift-front, there is no doubt that they provide excellent arc flash protection, and have for many years.
Paulson Manufacturing has revolutionized this tried and true piece of arc flash PPE with our new HT™ arc shields for hoods. These new shields feature our HT™ grey tint, which allows the user to distinguish between colors of wires in the field better than traditional green-tinted arc shields.
The advantages of the HT™ arc shield go well beyond the grey tint. It has a wide range of features and benefits all designed with user safety and comfort in mind. These include:
Meets NFPA-70E and ANSI Z87+S
Meets/tested ASTM F2178
Models available with ATPV (Arc Thermal Protection Value) of 25, 40, 75, and 100 calories/cm2
Shields include a universal hole pattern to fit most cap brackets
Excellent field of view and color recognition with nanoparticle grey color and transparent chin protector
Premium anti-fog/anti-abrasion coated
Because of the nanotechnology, single-lens shields now available up to 40 calories/cm2

The HT™ lenses of our new arc shields have several significant advantages over the legacy green lenses, including:
Nanoparticle additives provide improved energy absorption and arc flash protection
Scientifically proven improved color recognition
Long-term outdoor exposure improvement
Color transmittance curve is similar to the Lambda curve of the human eye
Single-lens high calorie shields are now possible, up to 40 calories
Feature an abrasion resistant coating on the front surface and a permanent anti-fog coating on the interior.
OSHA and NFPA-70E regulations are going to continue to become more stringent. This is obviously good for worker safety, but many people are not crazy about the idea of having to wear PPE. The good news is that advancements in technology has allowed us to offer safety products that are safer and more comfortable than ever before. Our HT™ arc shields for hoodsare the next evolution of Category 4 arc flash face shields, and we are proud to call it a Paulson brand.
