Electrical Arc Flash hazards are a known danger in the workplace and must be addressed to protect people who may be exposed to this dangerous threat. The potential users of the AmpShield™ Arc Shield are not only electrical workers in industry or at an electrical utility; also Firefighters approaching a powered installation or emergency staff in any number of potential scenarios involving electricity could use this item. Many products are currently available to provide the personal protective equipment (PPE) and this includes Arc Flash Protective Face Shields. With a new level of convenient features for the worker and unprecedented peripheral vision the new AmpShield Arc Shield will be well received in the market. The AmpShield is positioned between the legacy line of Arc Shields from Paulson Mfg and the highly feature laden 3Phase Arc Shield product line.

The new AmpShield Arc Shield is designed to protect against thermal, optical and mechanical hazards typically generated by an Arc Flash event. Specific models are able to meet the ASTM F2178 testing for Arc Thermal Performance Value up to 20 Calories per centimeter squared (cal/cm²). The products utilize innovative strategies of design and unique materials to minimize weight, increase performance and maintain durability. The advantages and flexibility of the design allow variations that will fit many applications and satisfy the end user requirements of comfort, ventilation, fogging resistance and a wide field of view. The design is based on the needs and desires of the end users, to have a product that minimally interferes with their work flow and yet provides a rating for arc flash up to 20 Cal/cm2. The AmpShield product line provides windows that are polycarbonate with premium coating to provide the best performance. The front surface is a highly abrasion resistant coating that incorporates custom additives to improve the Arc Flash protection. The interior coating incorporates a permanent anti-fog coating that is also abrasion resistant.

As an improvement to the Paulson product line the development of the AmpShield Arc Shield came from the years of experience at Paulson Mfg of building Arc Shields at all different ATPV values. The features and benefits of the AmpShield Arc Shield cannot be found in any other product on the market and are truly unique. The product was designed for the people who would use it, day in and day out in conditions from freezing winter weather to the sweltering conditions of summertime in an underground vault. This product is designed to be ready for action 24 hours per day, rain or shine. The AmpShield Arc Shield design provides protection above and beyond just the requirements. The sides of the AmpShield Arc Shield extend beyond what is required to simply pass the requirements; this adds additional protection for the end user.

The AmpShield Arc Shield design will be trademarked domestically and internationally along with the Leverlock trademark. The AmpShield has 3 patents pending and will carry international patents as well.

The AmpShield product line will be available in January 2015.

The Three Models of the AmpShield

Model Amp1
This is an Arc Shield that has been designed to pass the Arc Testing Requirements of ASTM F2178. The maximum cal/cm² rating planned for this product is 20 cal/cm². The shield will fit Cap Style Hard Hats and will mount into the Accessory Slots of the Helmet. Various slotted cap adapters are available for different models of hard hats. The four models are Class 2, 10 calorie, 12 calorie and 20 cal/cm². There are 2 sizes of the transparent chin protector. The 10 calorie unit will carry the large chin protector and all other Levels will use the extra-large chin protector.

AmpShield
Model Amp2
This is an Arc Shield that has been designed to pass the Arc Testing Requirements of ASTM F2178. The maximum cal/cm² rating planned for this product is 20 cal/cm². The shield will fit Cap Style Hard Hats and will mount with a universal elastomeric strap. This unit is designed to keep the accessory slots of the helmet open for the use of hearing protectors. The four models are Class 2, 10 calorie, 12 calorie and 20 cal/cm². There are 2 sizes of the transparent chin protector. The 10 calorie unit will carry the large chin protector and all other Levels will use the extra-large chin protector.

Window Technology
All the Windows for the AmpShield will employ the Arc Flash Armor Technology. These utilize the newest technology that has unprecedented Luminous Transmittance for every ATPV level. These windows include nanotechnology and the latest innovative materials. The Windows are factory assembled to the Chin Protectors as a unit. The windows are all single lens designs up to 20 calorie ATPV. All Windows are Polycarbonate with a permanent Anti Fog coating on the interior and an Abrasion Resistant Hard Coating on the front surface.

Peripheral Vision
All versions of the AmpShield Arc Shield have similar peripheral vision specifications. The AmpShield product has unparalleled peripheral vision in all directions. The optically polished chin protector is available in two distinct sizes due to testing requirements. The transparent chin protector allows excellent downward vision when the Window is deployed. The Chin Protector is matched to the ATPV rating of the Window.

The AmpShield is designed to meet the peripheral vision requirements of all standards required for this product and application.

Deploying and Stowing the Window
The Window is deployed by closing the window until it contacts the front brim of the helmet. To stow the window lift the window until it is out of the visual area. The tension of the pivots can be adjusted at any time by tightening or loosening at the pivot screws. The oversize triangular knobs are designed to be easily used with heavy gloves.

Cap Bracket
The AmpShield features the new interior mounting shield system with LeverLock. This new system allows for quick window replacement without the use of tools. The interior mounting system provides a smooth exterior surface that reduces the chance of catching the window attachments on objects in the working environment. This system keeps the window in compression against the inside of the cap bracket. Note that the LeverLock system and the AmpShield require a specific attachment pattern for the Window. The Window attachment pattern will only be compatible with the AmpShield.

Transparent Chin Protector
The AmpShield incorporates a Transparent Chin Protector. This allows a natural downward view, improving balance and spatial awareness. The visual tint of the AmpShield frame varies with the ATPV rating of the product. The frame will carry the model number and the ATPV rating of the product. There are two sizes of the Chin Protector, depending on the ATPV value of the product.

Ventilation
The AmpShield is well ventilated at the top and sides of the unit. This ventilation utilizes the natural convection of rising heat and moisture to rise out the top at the center of the unit drawing in fresh air from the sides and below the chin protector. Ventilation ribs are incorporated into the cap bracket. These ribs space the cap bracket away from the helmet brim to create the space required to vent the unit. The protection levels have been thoroughly tested to prove that the ventilation features are blocking the Arc Energy up to levels at the top rating of the product.

Pivot Assembly
The pivot assembly of the AmpShield Arc Shield can be tightened to increase the friction at the pivots. The Detent Washer is mounted on one side of the unit, this can be ordered with Detent Washers mounted on both sides to increase the Ratchet Action.

Replacement Parts
The replacement window for the AmpShield comes preassembled with the Chin Protector with a matching ATPV value. The LeverLock Cap Bracket feature enables the window to be changed easily and without tools. Instructions will be included and a link to the video that demonstrates care and maintenance. Replacement parts must be matched to the ATPV rating of the original item.



Cleaning and Maintenance
To clean the AmpShield, wash with warm water with a mild detergent all parts including the window. Pat dry and let it final dry before use. Please see the Cleaning and Maintenance Video on the Paulson Web Site.
Do not use Windex or other window cleaning products on the AmpShield.

Manufacturing Date
The AmpShield Arc Shield includes a Manufacturing Date on the Window. The revised OSHA 1910.269 requirements suggest replacement of the Window every 2 years.

Q&A about the AmpShield
Q: Will the Amp Shield replacement Window work in my current CB2 Bracket?
A: No, it will not fit, the attachment pattern in the window is specific to fit the AmpShield.

Q: Can I use a different Chin Protector on a 12 calorie Window?
A: No, each calorie rating is matched between the window and the transparent chin protector and the chin protector is permanently attached to the window.

Q: Why does the Chin Protector come with the replacement Window?
A: The Chin Protector is permanently attached to the Window to prevent mix and match issues along with the chance that the end user would remove it and use the product without the chin protector.

Q: Will the AmpShield fit my helmet?
A: You need to identify the style of helmet and then choose between the different AmpShield models. There is a model for most helmets, domestic or international.

Q: When should I replace the Window in my AmpShield?
A: OSHA suggests replacement after two years of Service. In addition to the OSHA suggestion, replace if damaged or worn.

Q: Can I store the AmpShield in my truck, it gets hot in the cab.
A: You can store the AmpShield in the hot cab, just keep it out of direct sun light.

Q: I noticed that the detent device in the pivot is only on one side, is there something missing?
A: This is how the product is designed, one pivot carries the detent device and the other side is a friction pivot.

Q: Why is the AmpShield 10 calorie ATPV Chin Protector smaller than the other models?
A: The Chin protector is sized and formulated to the specific calorie rating of the product.

Q: I see that the AmpShield only comes with Premium Coated Arc Shields, can I purchase Standard Arc Shields for the AmpShield?
A: No, the only shields certified for use in the AmpShield are the Premium Coated Arc Shields.

Q: Does the AmpShield meet the requirement of ANSI Z87.1 +?
A: Yes, the AmpShield product line meets the standard and the high speed impact rating designated by the “+” symbol.
